Rippy
Rip Van Winkle “Rippy”
is a polite, well-mannered 23 year-old dark bay Saddlebred
gelding. Rippy’s story is a little sad -- he was owned
and adored by a teenage girl in New Jersey and was kept in
a state-of-the-art show barn. The girl’s father passed
away suddenly and Rippy ended up at Summerwinds Rescue in
Hartly, Delaware, because of financial difficulties.
Rippy is the mediator within our group of horses, and is already
a big hit with several of our riders. We are very happy that
we were able to “rescue” a horse and provide a
wonderful home and a meaningful life. Rippy seems to understand
and enjoy his job. He is one of the favorites at Summerwinds,
so when he is no longer happy as a four-legged therapist at
SDTRHR, he can go to their 200 acre retirement facility. The
perfect situation for us at SDTRHR! |

Champ
Champ, a Red
Dun Quarterhorse, was
donated to SDTRHR in May of 2007 by a family in the area.
He is a very handsome with a dorsal stripe and faint stripes
on his front legs. We guesstimate his age to be 20. Champ
has spent the last five years in a pasture with just a goat
for a friend. Prior to that he had been rescued from a home
where he was not being adequately fed.
Champ is incredibly calm and sturdy. He is
pretty much unflappable except when grain is involved!!! He
handled the ramp like a “champ” the very first
time we showed it to him. He has a very smooth trot and responds
best to adult male riders. For a horse
that has not worked for a very long time, Champ has proven
to be very adaptable and seems eager to please. He seems to
enjoy his new job and really thrives on all of the attention
he receives. All of our riders and volunteers
love Champ! We are very fortunate to have him in our program!
